I recently purchased Nikon D5300 with 18-140mm lens. Just love the image quality this camera produces. I want to know my shutter actuations, for which I downloaded Opanda IExif 2.3 software, but when I open the photos clicked with this camera, I do not get the 'Total Number of Shutter Releases for Camera' entry itself. If you upload an un edited photo to Flickr you can check the EXIF data of that picture to find out the shutter count from the camera. What is the Maximum Shutter Count Rating for My Camera?
It vary widely by model. Obviously, canon's professional models last much longer than entry-level model. 5D Mark II 's shutter assures trouble-free operation over its 150,000-cycle.
Canon 450D (Canon EOS Rebel XSi) 's shutter life is about 50,000 actuations. But it's not an exact match, it can failed at 25.000 or continue to working great after 100.000 actuations. It's just an average.

EXIF data is on all the images cameras shoot.
Using a program like OPanda (free) you can read all the information about that image file.
This includes how many shutter cycles have been used to that point.
It will look like this
Total Number of Shutter Releases for Camera = 20510
This was taken directly off a image file I shot last week.
Nikon D5 Shutter Count Data
You have heard that the number of shutter cycles is an important thing to know. What no one has mentioned is that the number of shutter cycles that the camera company runs on their cameras and just that. Tests. They are not anywhere near the point where a cameras shutter may fail.
I have a colleague who has some Nikon D3's. They are tested to 300, 000 cycles. One of his cameras has over one million cycles on it and it is still performing perfectly. The other failed at just over 700, 000 cycles. $450 later, he had a new shutter.
Shutter cycles, mp's and other things are just marketing tools and have not much to do with how well a camera performs
I would disagree with David. Not all cameras capture that data. I have a Canon 1000D and even with OPanda I can't find the data. Add_target cmake. I contacted Canon and they told me only a technician could read the shutter count because on the 1000D it's not available to the consumer - don't ask, I don't know.
